Question of the Week

Why should I invest in certified seed potatoes? Instead I can use my own surplus from the recent harvest at no additional cost.

Why go to all the trouble if your seed material is not 100 per cent up to standard?

A sub-optimal seed potato leads to a sub-optimal harvest: less volume, less quality.

Yes, it is true certified seed potatoes cost more at the start. But with appropriate crop management you will save considerably more through having a greater production and more efficient use of inputs like fertiliser, pesticide, irrigation water, labour et cetera.

Starting with certified seed potatoes for every new planting has many advantages:

  • They are certified, meaning they conform to high standards developed by the seed potato sector;
  • This certification means certified seed potatoes are healthy when they arrive at your field;
  • They provide the best start for consistent and healthy potato production;
  • This results in more production volume per land area and higher-quality potatoes.
